3 Automated Nasdaq Trading Strategies: How Portfolio Diversification Can Reduce Drawdowns
Three trading algorithms. Three different methodologies. One combined portfolio designed to balance trend following and mean reversion in E-mini and Micro E-mini Nasdaq futures.
Watch David Bean review each strategy, its equity curve, and the combined portfolio results as of October 22, 2026.
Why Combine Three Nasdaq Trading Systems?
A trading strategy can be profitable over the long run and still go months—or even more than a year—without reaching a new equity high. That makes following an individual algorithm challenging, particularly through prolonged drawdowns or sideways performance.
Our 3 System Portfolio NQ combines strategies with different entry patterns and market exposures. The objective is to avoid depending on a single strategy to perform well in every market environment.
THE DIVERSIFICATION EXAMPLE
V-Reversal had an individual historical maximum drawdown of approximately $24,000, while the combined three-strategy portfolio had a historical maximum drawdown of $21,135.
The individual worst drawdowns did not all occur at the same time. This illustrates a historical benefit of diversification; smaller future drawdowns are not guaranteed.
Inside the 3 System Portfolio NQ
1. NQ V-Reversal — Mean Reversion
V-Reversal seeks opportunities for price to reverse after moves away from prevailing levels. Its historical results included a 52% win rate, approximately $126 average trade profit, and roughly $24,000 maximum drawdown. The strategy was in an extended flat period at the time of the video, a reminder that profitable algorithms can experience long waits between equity highs.
2. NQ Gap Continuation 2020 — Long-Only Trend
Gap Continuation seeks bullish continuation opportunities and takes long trades only. It showed approximately $419 average trade profit and $10,000 maximum drawdown. After a difficult period in the first half of 2025, its historical equity curve recovered to new highs. It had not generated a trade in October at the time of this review.
3. NQ Open Range — Long/Short Trend
Open Range identifies patterns early in the trading session, but it is not a conventional opening-range breakout. It trades both directions, seeks occasional large winners, cuts losses quickly, and allows gains to run. Its lower win rate can make it psychologically difficult to follow in isolation.
The strategy showed approximately $341 average trade profit and $17,755 maximum drawdown. Historically, its short trades contributed substantially more profit than its long trades—a useful contrast with the portfolio's long-only Gap Continuation system.
Combined Portfolio Performance
The combined results tell a different story than simply adding the individual strategy drawdowns. As reported in the video, the portfolio had recently reached an equity peak and stood approximately $3,300 below that peak on October 22, 2026.
| Portfolio Metric | Reported Result |
| Maximum historical drawdown | $21,135 |
| Drawdown as of Oct. 22, 2026 | $3,300 |
| Average net trade P&L | $183.64 |
| Profit factor | 1.36 |
| Winning / losing trades | 1,840 / 1,937 |
| Assumed round-turn trading costs | $25 |
Historical strategy-testing statistics shown in the video; trading costs are modeled at $25 per round turn. These are not independently verified live-account returns.
The Real Challenge: Staying With the System
An algorithm can have positive long-term expectancy while losing more trades than it wins. The combined portfolio records 1,840 winning trades and 1,937 losing trades, yet its reported average net trade was positive. The strategy edge depends on the relationship between the size of winning and losing trades—not simply the percentage of trades that win.
Diversification does not eliminate risk. The goal is to combine differentiated trading approaches so that periods of strength in one strategy may help offset weakness in another. This can make a systematic approach more practical to follow through changing market conditions.

Platforms and Contract Sizes
The portfolio is offered for TradeStation, NinjaTrader 8, and MultiCharts, and supports E-mini Nasdaq-100 (NQ) and Micro E-mini Nasdaq-100 (MNQ) futures. A single Micro contract has one-tenth the dollar exposure of a single E-mini contract; actual net results will differ with execution, costs, sizing, and slippage.
