The Nasdaq futures market delivered a powerful downside move on Friday, October 16, 2026, and several Capstone Trading Systems algorithmic strategies capitalized on the selloff with significant short-side gains.
Our 18-System Portfolio NQ gained $30,585 during Friday's session, led by two standout strategies: NQ Pulse and NQ Open Range. Both captured extended intraday short trends, demonstrating the value of systematic trading strategies designed to respond to different market environments.
| Trading Strategy | Friday's Result |
|---|---|
| NQ Pulse | +$11,175 |
| NQ Open Range | +$10,450 |
| NQ Tick Reversal | +$6,710 |
| NQ VSD Divergence | +$975 |
| NQ Mag Seven | +$975 |
| NQ V-Reversal | -$1,340 |
While several strategies captured substantial short-side profits, others exited earlier using trailing stops. Different exit methodologies can produce very different results during a large directional market move.
For example, NQ Pulse and NQ Open Range captured extended short trends, while other systems exited their positions earlier. This illustrates why portfolio diversification can extend beyond entry signals to include position management and exit strategies.
Friday's trading session produced significant changes in portfolio equity curves and drawdown levels across several Capstone Trading Systems portfolios.
Friday's strong gains reduced the portfolio's drawdown from approximately $38,000 to approximately $8,000 below its previous equity peak.
The portfolio entered Friday approximately $5,795 below its equity peak. Strong Open Range performance helped lift the portfolio to new equity highs.
NQ Pulse and VSD Divergence generated profitable short trades, partially offset by losses in V-Reversal and V-Reversal Aggressive.
Equivalent to approximately $11,950 per E-mini Nasdaq contract. Friday's results substantially reduced the portfolio's existing drawdown.
Preliminary gain for the portfolio's E-mini Nasdaq contract allocation. The portfolio moved to approximately $100 below its previous equity peak.

Not every strategy was profitable. Our NQ V-Reversal strategy experienced a loss of $1,340, reinforcing the importance of evaluating diversified portfolios rather than judging performance based on individual trades.
Algorithmic trading isn't necessarily about predicting whether the Nasdaq will rise or fall. It's about developing systematic trading strategies that can identify and capitalize on opportunities across changing market conditions.
Friday's session illustrates how trend-following, opening-range, momentum, and reversal strategies can produce different outcomes during the same market environment.
The NQ Pulse and NQ Open Range strategies were particularly effective at capturing the extended downside trend, while some reversal strategies experienced losses.
Diversification across trading methodologies, entry techniques, and exit strategies can help reduce dependence on a single type of market behavior. However, diversification does not eliminate risk or guarantee profitability.
