Market Environment

Nasdaq Consolidates Ahead of the Jobs Report

Following last week’s sharp four-day rally, the stock-index markets have traded sideways to modestly lower during the past two sessions. On Thursday afternoon, Nasdaq-100 futures consolidated near the 29,500 level as traders prepared for Friday’s employment report, scheduled for 7:30 a.m. Central Time and 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time.

Crude oil gained more than 3% during the session but remained in the $77 range. The VIX traded as low as 15.14, returning to an area near 15 that has repeatedly acted as support this year. A renewed rise in volatility from this level could become a bearish factor for equities.

The 30-year Treasury bond moved back into the 109 handle as interest rates increased during the session.

Key question: Can liquidity and bullish market psychology continue to overpower increasingly overbought technical and fundamental conditions?

Nasdaq futures advanced approximately 2,700 points from last Thursday’s low to Tuesday’s high. The two-day pause that followed may represent routine consolidation, but Friday’s employment report could determine whether the next move is a continuation of the rally or a broader retracement.

Markets may also remain sensitive to geopolitical developments involving the Strait of Hormuz or any unexpected headline that changes the current risk environment.

Nasdaq Levels to Watch

31,100 and 32,500 Remain Important Upside Reference Points

The front-month Nasdaq-100 futures contract’s all-time-high area is near 31,100.

Beyond that level, 32,500 represents the next major psychological objective. That level was approximately 2,400 points above Wednesday’s high.

The recent price action has resembled a stealth bull market—gradual overnight strength followed by the potential for sharp upside acceleration when new information enters the market.
